Robert G. Bain

Experience comes with time! Throughout the years I have been lucky enough to work with some great folks that share my enthusiasm for excellence. The kudos from my teammates mean so much to me and tell the story of how I have grown as a leader throughout the years.

Cheerleader of the company

This reference is in support of Robert Bain who worked for Price’s Alarm Systems for 11 years as our Director of Marketing. During the time with Price’s Alarms, Robert oversaw our subscriber base grow from a modest amount to approximately 40,000 accounts. At that point the company attracted interest and was sold to Telus.

Not only did Robert look after the marketing, he became a resource for our own staff of roughly 175 employees in our 9 offices. He provided inspiration and enthusiasm with his resourcefulness in arranging a variety of activities to enhance employee participation and motivation. 

Robert was a member and crucial contributor to our management team which helped guide the company in its growth. From the very beginning, Robert has been one of the most energetic and enthusiastic employees that I have had the pleasure to work with. He has been a supporter and “cheerleader” of the company throughout his time. Robert is a hard worker and totally dedicates himself to any project that he undertakes. He was often one of the first to arrive and the last to leave. 

Moreover we counted on Robert to spearhead many of the new initiatives or projects as they arose. Often this required traveling to out-of-town home shows or our remote offices. In summary any organization would be fortunate to have Robert representing them in any role that requires a high level of abilities and ethics.

Robert Bain is a lock to win

Robert and I have served two tours of duty together.  First with Columbia Fuels, second when I brought him to Prices Alarms.  I look forward to our third opportunity, when the time comes!  Do not hesitate to add Robert to your team should you have the chance. His passion and dedication to increasing revenue, improving margin, anchoring your brand and shaping the culture of your organization will result in a handsome return on your investment. 

With Robert leading the sales and marketing functions, and myself leading finance we had different approaches to solving problems.  We have spent 100’s of hours, late into the evenings, debating our perspectives before arriving at the best path forward to present to ownership.  There was blood, sweat, tears (mostly from Robert) and endless laughter along the journey.  Without exception the result was worth the effort.  His zeal is infectious, and his contributions impactful.  Spend an hour with him and see for yourself.

I am better at my job now because I was lucky enough to work with Robert.  There aren’t many guaranteed bets when making senior personnel decisions, but Robert Bain is a lock to win.  He taught me so much about business and life, I will forever be grateful for the serendipity that brought us together in the first place.  Place your bet.

I have been fortunate to work with Robert for over a decade at Price’s Alarms. He is a mentor, a motivator, a marketing genius, and a truly engaging leader who inspires others to be their best self. 

He has a keen eye for identifying talent, and develops people into remarkable leaders. He pushes people outside of their comfort zone in the best possible way, challenging them to grow their confidence and achieve their goals. Accepting the status quo is not a lens he sees through; he is an innovator and constantly looking to do bigger and better things. I was lucky. Robert took me under his wing when I was a junior and unexperienced leader, and as a result I have become a very successful operations manager with endless potential and opportunity ahead of me. He helped me establish a strong personal brand, through teaching me to be brave, to own my thoughts, to stand up for what is right, and to push the limits to achieve great accomplishments. I owe a great deal of my success to Robert’s mentorship and guidance. 

He is known for his creativity, his quick wit, and his commitment to drive success. Whether it was leading the company’s social committee to drive employee engagement; moving and setting up new office locations throughout Western Canada to expand our brand; taking an active role in recruitment and guiding how leaders conducted interviews to better identify talented candidates to shape who joined the company; being the emcee at the annual Christmas party to spice things up; or being on the road working 45 days straight during trade-show season to take an active role in how the company was represented to the public; Robert’s attitude is to jump in, take ownership, drive engagement, and work until the job is done. On top of that, he has fun while doing it, and brings joy to others who are lucky enough to work with him. 

I’ve used the word lucky a few times when describing the opportunity to work with Robert. If you get the chance to work with him, within a few hours you will understand why I feel so strongly about this. He will bring you and your business to heights you didn’t think were possible, and you will have a tremendous amount of fun on the journey.

His title wasn’t adequate

Robert was so much more than the Director of Marketing for Price’s Alarms; it has been a common thread among the team that his title was just not adequate! I have worked with Robert for over 10 years with all but a few months reporting directly to him. As a leader, Robert empowered me to manage my area of the business and my team, he was supportive and was the ultimate coach. Robert treated me as an equal and showed respect for my ideas and opinions, even if he disagreed. I was always given a seat at the table and Robert truly “had my back” in that he trusted my decision making and would come straight to me for clarification if he was being challenged on something. He leads by example and his actions always match his words – this quality can be absent in so many leaders but not with Robert. 

He embodied the team spirit of Price’s Alarms and showed all members of the company that no job was too small or insignificant to be tackled by a Director. If there was something Robert could do to support the team, our customer’s or the company, Robert would jump in to delegate or take on the task himself. He was the champion at Price’s Alarms in the formation of the Social Committee: hosting team building events, celebrations, charity donation drives and really driving employee engagement. Robert was instrumental in re-branding Price’s Alarms as a place you wanted to work by spearheading a company re-organization in 2011 and introducing a team-based hiring approach. These changes really helped show employees that there was a place for them to grow in their career path and cut down on turnover. 

As the Director of Marketing, one of biggest impacts Robert had was spearheading the launch of a new product & service offering called Alarm.com. Robert came in and took a full-service approach creating simple, engaging messaging tailored to start conversations with our customers, hosting demos and training on the products with every department company-wide. If you worked for us, Robert made sure you not only knew about this product but were excited about it knowing how it could help our customers. Robert takes a customer centric approach which is why his marketing strategies are so successful, he really hones-in on what the buyer needs to see, feel and know. This product is now sold in more than 90% of our deals and had increased our recurring revenue by more than 50% in a few short years. I enthusiastically recommend Robert Bain.

He embodied the team spirit of Price’s Alarms

OTJJ = On The Job Joy

I first met Robert almost 30 years ago when I was just starting out my career and he was a customer. As a customer he was an energetic, knowledgeable, and entertaining person to deal with. He was always down to earth, funny and a pleasure to deal with. I was fortunate enough to work with him at a few companies after that, and as a co-worker he was a fantastic person to work with. He brings a type of energy, humour and enthusiasm to his daily work that is infectious and has a positive impact on everyone around him. At Columbia Fuels, he coined the term OTJJ (on the job joy) as part of a concept to improve morale and employee engagement. The idea was to create new rituals or celebrations at work that were both fun and lighthearted (fun events, breakfasts hosted by marketing, surprising celebrations, etc.) This approach was wildly successful in turning around a company that was struggling at the time with keeping employees happy and focused. I still talk about this concept with current employers and use it as an example of how with a bit of effort, a workplace culture can be changed for the better. I’ve seen the same approach towards brand management and marketing. Taking innovative approaches and calculated risks designed to engage in new ways with customers and promote the brands in interesting ways. It was always interesting to see how Robert’s work helped to improve not only customer impression of the brand, but also the pride that this instilled in the employees. If I ever found myself in need of branding or marketing advice, I can think of no one else I would go to. Robert has a creative and energetic mind that would benefit any branding/marketing effort. I would not be surprised to find myself working with Robert again one day and would welcome that.

He is a true team player

I’ve had the pleasure of working with and knowing Robert Bain for over 20 years. When I first met Robert, he had joined Columbia Fuels as Director of Marketing. We worked together again at Price’s Alarms where his title was again Director of Marketing, but he truly fulfilled many roles. He operated as the VP of Sales and Marketing but also the de facto HR manager, office manager, space planner, hiring coach and developer of the social committee.

Robert has always quickly shown his value to the company, but also to the staff throughout the organization. He is a true team player, ensuring the company excels in the marketplace, is innovative, and leading the industry in new products and services. He shines at researching, engaging the experts and developing new ideas, approaches and opportunities with the mindset of ensuring ‘we are the best’. He has a talent for encouraging and mentoring everyone around him to do their best and succeed, no matter their position within the organization; Robert believes everyone should be treated equally and fairly. He is a strong believer in company joy and can boost morale even when difficult times may be happening within the organization. Whether it be putting on a costume as a mascot for a morning to creating a pie tasting contest or just lending an ear, he always had some tricks up his sleeves to bring smiles to the faces of the staff.

On a personal level, knowing Robert for as long as I have, he’s not only been an exceptional co-worker, but also one of my biggest supporters, mentors, and friends. He has always been the type of person to encourage people to pursue more and do what makes them happy. “You never know if you don’t try” has been something he’s said many times over the years of our friendship. I truly believe any organization that Robert is a part of will benefit greatly from his drive, determination, and passion to do the best job possible.

I have known Robert for approximately 25 years which began with him hiring me for a position I knew nothing about…the internet! Mind you, back then, nobody knew much about the internet because it was just in its infancy. Every day was filled with learning and I was proud to be a part of the company we all built together.
